German govt approves legislation to ban glyphosate starting 2024

Recently, the German cabinet passed a draft law that German farmers will have to gradually reduce the use of glyphosate and stop using glyphosate completely from 2024 in order to protect insect habitats.

German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said in a statement that the moment of glyphosate's exit is coming, and environmentalists have been working hard for this.

German farmers criticized the draft, saying that the bill will force the survival of family-run farms into crisis, and that the ban is more effective in promoting biodiversity than the cooperation between farmers and conservationists. It's really limited.

Glyphosate was developed by Monsanto, a company acquired by Bayer, under the Roundup brand. Since the World Health Organization concluded in 2015 that glyphosate may cause cancer, it has sparked intense global controversy.

According to the draft law, some areas will ban the use of herbicides and pesticides that may harm bees. In addition, certain types of lights will be banned to reduce light pollution.

Joachim Rukwied, head of the German Farmers’ Association, stated that the proposed regulations are the wrong way to achieve efficient environmental protection, adding: “Agricultural practitioners have established partnerships with protectors and determined common goals, methods and incentives for protecting the environment. More hopeful."

The legislation also needs to be approved by the Bundestag lower house and the Bundestag upper house, which represent the interests of the 16 federal state governments in Germany. This process usually takes several months.
