China China ICAMA Consults on Risk Assessment Guidance for Mosquito Repellent Products

By Fang Lin on Thursday, 27 November 2014 in Agrochemical News

on 10 Oct 2014, China ICAMA released an announcement opening the draft of “Guidance on Residential Health Risk Assessment of Mosquito Coils, Vaporizing mats and Liquid Vaporizers” for public consultation. The guidance draft provides the procedures and methods for primary risk assessment of mosquito repellent products, which is applicable for health assessment of residential pesticides.

Generally, the Acceptable Residential Exposure Level (AREL) of these products can be extrapolated from the basic toxicity data and additional uncertainty factors. The exposure level is influenced by a combination of factors, including the physic-chemical property of the product, user’s habit and room condition. Exposure to mosquito replant products can be classified into inhalation exposure, dermal exposure and oral exposure (only applicable to infant). The Risk Quotient (RQ) can be calculated by the ratio of the exposure level to the AREL. If the total inhalation, dermal and oral RQ is less than or equal to 1, the health risk of the repellent product is acceptable. Otherwise, the risk posed by the product will be identified as unacceptable and further risk assessment could be required, which requires further toxicity studies or simulation testing of the product. The guidance will be available for public comment until 30 November.
